Importance of environmental data for adaptation to climate change and efficient nature management
Second Conference on cooperation in ecology between Finland and Kyrgyzstan “Importance of environmental data for adaptation to climate change and efficient nature management” was held on September 29, 2016 in Bishkek city.
Organizers of this activity were Finnish Environmental Institute, Finnish Geological Service and Finnish Meteorological Institute, which implementing a series of projects in Kyrgyz Republic and initiatives with the financial support of the Government of Finland.
Conference was opened by the Finnish Ambassador in Astana, Kazakhstan – Mr. Ilkka Rӓisӓnen. Also welcoming speech to the Conference participants was made by the deputy of Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic – Mr. Zhaparov Akylbek Usenbekovich. The purpose of the conference is to create and support a common platform for experience sharing and information between all interested parties, both representatives of state bodies of the Kyrgyz Republic, academic community, NGOs, civil sector, representatives from the Central Asian region, and development partners. The key topics for discussion at the Conference were innovative methods in the collection, processing and storage of environmental data and their primary importance for taking sound decisions with respect to efficient nature management and environmental protection, as well as developing and implementing measures to adapt to climate change.
Project managers, as well as project partners, including those represented by the civil sector, have presented presentations on the activities implemented in the framework of the discussed areas in the Kyrgyz Republic with the support of the Government of Finland, which make an invaluable contribution to the implementation of activities and the achievement of the tasks set. The need to increase the level of public participation in such activities was highlighted by Mr. Juhani Toivonen, Ambassador and Development Policy Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, who addressed the Conference participants with a closing speech. Also in his speech Mr. Juhani Toivonen has noted the significant results, achieved during the period of cooperation, which is a justified reason for the continuation and deepening of the subsequent cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Finland.
Together with the Finnish Environmental Institute, the preliminary arrangements have been made to organize a working visit to study the Finland’s experience in establishment of Water Information System.
